Mogamat Salih Davids
A Life of Activism, Education, and Cultural Preservation
Mogamat Salih Davids is a dedicated activist, educator, and cultural leader whose work has spanned South Africa's most turbulent political periods. From resisting Apartheid in his youth to working in government and preserving Cape Malay culture, his contributions have left a lasting impact on his community and country.
Anti-Apartheid Activism: Fighting for Freedom
Growing up in Manenberg, Cape Town, under the harsh realities of Apartheid, Davids became involved in activism at a young age. He played an active role in numerous student, youth, and liberation movements: Students Representative Council (SRC) at Phoenix Senior Secondary (Manenberg), Manenberg Students Congress & Western Cape Students Congress, Cape Youth Congress (CAYCO), Call of Islam, United Democratic Front (UDF), African National Congress (ANC), and uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK).
Youth activists like Davids risked arrest and detention, worked underground organising meetings and distributing banned materials, challenged laws such as the Pass Laws, Bantu Education Act and Group Areas Act, and took part in protests and boycotts that helped bring Apartheid to an end.
Post-Apartheid Contributions: Building a Democratic South Africa
Davids began working for the South African government in 1995, ensuring the ideals of democracy, justice and equality were implemented in public policy. He earned a BA Honours in Comparative Religion from the University of Johannesburg, helped disadvantaged youth access higher education, and advocated for policies to uplift marginalised communities affected by Apartheid-era inequalities.
Cultural Leadership & Heritage Preservation
Davids has dedicated much of his life to preserving Cape Malay cultural traditions, particularly the Nederlands Lied and Moppie/Comic musical forms. He serves as President of the Proteas Choir (originally the Protea Sporting Club, established 1946 in District Six), leading efforts to keep the choir's traditions alive. He is also Founder and Life President of the Keep The Dream Choir Board, established in 2010, focused on sustaining Cape Malay musical heritage, making cultural participation financially accessible, and fostering these traditions among younger generations.
Legacy & Impact
Mogamat Salih Davids' work spans political activism, public service, and cultural preservation, a generation of struggle heroes who transitioned from resistance to reconstruction, ensuring South Africa moves forward while honouring its history and heritage.
