Professional Life

Locum tenens stints in general practice for Dr AW Barday and Drs. F & Y Jakoet from mid-1980 to mid-1982. On 9 July 1982, set up own practice in Belhar, joined by brother Dr Majedi Bassier at the beginning of 1984. Over the years, involved in relocations and setting up of other practices. Currently flagship practice situated in the Belhar Mall in Belhar. Visiting Lecturer attached to the Department of Family Medicine, Tygerberg Medical School, University of Stellenbosch (2002–2010).

Community Involvement — Past

  • Secretary, Arabian College Cricket Club, 1974–1976
  • Executive member of the UCT MSA (Muslim Students Association), 1975–1978
  • Arabian College representative at the historic 1976 meeting where many cricket clubs belonging to the Green Point-based WPCA decided to amalgamate to form the United Cricket Club
  • Chairperson of the Western Cape MSA, 1977–1978
  • Co-organiser of the MSA National Conference held in East London in 1977
  • Longest-serving living contributor (1983–2020) to the quarterly Boorhaanol Newsletter/Magazine, anchoring the “Test Your Knowledge,” “Focus On” and “You are called upon…” series
  • Attending physician to the Belhar Advice Office (NPO) during the “struggle” years (1984–1994)
